SMITHSONIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO KNOWLEDGE. MAGNETICAL OBSERVATIONS IN THE ARCTIC SEAS. [with:] METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS IN THE ARCTIC SEAS. [with:] TIDAL OBSERVATIONS IN THE ARCTIC ... Three articles written by Dr. Elisha Kane during the second Grinnell expedition in search of the missing Franklin party. Kane was commissioned by Lady Franklin on two separate expeditions in search of her missing husband. The first proved unsuccessful, though Kane uncovered the location where Franklin first wintered. Encouraged by this discovery, he returned two years later, travelling further north than other explorer to date. This volume, compiled by the Smithsonian Institution, includes condensed versions of his scientific observations during the voyage, including numerous charts and diagrams measuring atmospheric pressure, temperature, and tidal surveillance.
