Calvert promoted and financed this expedition, under the command of Lawrence Allen Wells, to explore unknown portions of inland Western Australia in 1896-97. The expedition failed to make any great discoveries and really only "showed that most of the unknown portions of the interior were uninhabitable desert" (Wantrup).
