Kneale’s ‘large book on logic - it is about a third of a million words in length - admits only two heroes: Aristotle and Frege. But is covers very fully the post-Aristotelian classical world and the middle ages, while passing fairly swiftly over the Renaissance and very quickly over the ‘logic’ of German idealism. The book includes independent discussion of theories of logical truth, summing up the content of many previous articles critical of the conventionalist version of the thesis that all necessary truth is analytic.
