Edmund Heinrich Naumann (1854-1922) was born in Germany and came to Japan at the behest of the Meiji Government. He was the first professor of Geology at the Imperial University of Tokyo. At the behest of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce (Noshomusho) he became involved in the process of systematically mapping the Japanese Archipelago.
