[VIRGINIA LAND GRANT SIGNED BY GOVERNOR JAMES WOOD, 1797]. A rare printed Virginia land grant completed in manuscript in a secretarial hand and signed by Virginia governor James Wood. The document grants 295 acres of land near the Jackson River in Botetourt County to William Linton, presumably a scion of the prominent Virginia family. James Wood was a Federalist and the 11th governor of Virginia after serving as commander of the 12th Virginia Regiment during the Revolutionary War. Later in life, Wood became an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati, serving as president of the Virginia branch from 1802-13.
