Переезды по Финляндии от Ладожского озера до реки Торнео.
£100 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books
Important work by Russian academician Grot (1812 - 93), which provides extensive observations of culture and character of the Finnish people that were recorded during Grot's trip in 1845-6. Having spent several years in Finland as a professor at the University of Helsinki and fluently speaking Swedish, Grot set a goal to re-introduce Finland to the rest of the Russian Empire. He strongly believed that even though its territories were part of the Russian Empire for almost 40 years, there was still little knowledge about Finnish culture and national character. Duodecimo (19 x 12.7 cm). XVII, 241 pp.; foxing, occasional spotting, lacking all 7 plates. Contemporary brown half-calf over marbled boards, gilt lettering and library shelf mark to spine; slightly rubbed. Obolyaninov 577.
