[Eaton, John Henry]:
$375 · Offered by William Reese Company
MEMOIRS OF ANDREW JACKSON, LATE MAJOR-GENERAL AND COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE SOUTHERN DIVISION OF THE ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES. First edition of this pro-Jackson biography, a product of the Presidential campaign of 1828. Particularly describes the southern Indian campaigns, and the Battle of New Orleans. Howes attributes authorship to Jerome V.C. Smith, though Miles says John Henry Eaton was the author and notes the presence of an inserted preface, paginated [5]-7 and dated March 15, 1828, not present in this copy, apparently as issued, and likely indicating an early issue. Sabin notes that the first edition contains a stipple portrait of Jackson by Thomas Kelly, as in this copy. There were many later reprints over the ensuing years.
