Manuscript plan on linen of the siege of Sebastopol: a fine and unusual map drawn by Sergeant Neubourg, according to the instructions of Captain Koch of the French First Foreign Infantry Regiment. It shows the location of the allied troops on the banks of the Chernaya River near the city of Sebastopol, which was besieged by the allies from September 1854 until the end of August 1855. The capture of the Redan Redoubt, one of two key strong-points in the defences of Sebastopol, by French troops, including the Legion, prompted the Russian evacuation and surrender of the city in August 1855, after an eleven month siege. This was the final episode in the Crimean War, which ended officially in February 1856. Despite being heavily involved in the fighting, more legionnaires succumbed to the deprivations of camp life, notably the bitter cold, than died in battle.
