the 'first Baedeker' guide-book. This was the second edition of the "Rheinreise" first written by Prof. J.A.Klein in 1828. Professor Klein had died in 1831 and Karl Baedeker had acquired Roehling's ( the publisher of Klein's Rheinreise in 1828) stock in 1832 He then re-issued the modest guide-book that same year (Hinrichsen D0) with no alterations. However this edition is the true "first Baedeker" as it contains Karl Baedeker's revisions and amendments. He expanded the text and added a folding map to the rear of the volume. Despite this copy being rather well used and worn - it is still a collectible item. Second edition. Small 8vo (18 x 12 cms) pp.[4] publisher's advert, [4], 517, 2 folding maps, 12 engraved views, some pages browned, some minor spotting, both folding maps torn and split into three parts, 8 preliminary pages including the title page detached, pages browned, pencilling inside on endpapapers; publisher's green cloth badly worn and rubbed ; a fair copy.
