A Journey to Katmandu (the capital of Nepaul)

£480 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books · No longer available

Laurence Oliphant's scarce first work recounting his journey to Nepal. In 1851 Oliphant accompanied Jang Bahadur (1817-1877), the controversial Prime Minister of Nepal, on his return journey from London to Nepal, joining the party at Colombo where Oliphant grew up. He gives a compelling account of the ancient city of Kathmandu and paid particular attention to the trade and economics of Nepal at that time. First edition. Small 8vo, x, 214 pp., four pages ads dated May 1852 at end, frontispiece map, original red printed boards lettered in black, rebacked red calf, a very good copy. Czech, Asian, p154; Marshall 546; Yakushi O20.
