WODEHOUSE, P. G.

£12,500 · Offered by Peter Harrington · No longer available

The Inimitable Jeeves. First edition, with excellent provenance: from the library of James H. Heineman (1917-1994), "the world's foremost collector of Wodehouse memorabilia" (Plum Lines), and later in the collection of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts (1941-2021), with their bookplates. The jacket is extremely rare: only one other example is listed in auction records. This is the second collection of Jeeves and Wooster short stories, following My Man Jeeves (1919), and the first in the legendary Jenkins format. The 18 short stories originally appeared in the Strand Magazine between 1918 and 1922. This is a first issue, without the full stop after the date on the title page.Heineman's bookplate is a delightful homage to Wodehouse, featuring a plum (the author's nickname), a typewriter, a pair of glasses, a pipe, a roadster, a top hat, a scarf reading "Wooster", and a garland featuring references to places and characters from Wodehouse's novels.
