early military stages of the Crimean War Fine map of Sebastopol showing the early military stages and formations of the Crimean War. With letterpress text providing military and geographical information. The war in Crimea took place in 1854-1855 and saw the Russian Imperial army oppose the allied troops of France, Britain and the Ottoman Empire in a series of battles that culminated in the famous siege of Sebastopol (Sevastopol) in the winter of 1854 and the subsequent defeat of the Russian Army. The historical event has been immortalised in the work of several artists and writers such as Leo Tolstoy, who served in the war and later wrote Sevastopol Sketches, three short stories based on his first hand experience of the Siege. Lithographed map (42x53.5 cm), partially coloured; slightly creased, minor foxing, minor tear to the centrefold.
