Burchett, Josiah:
$675 · Offered by William Reese Company
MEMOIRS OF TRANSACTIONS AT SEA DURING THE WAR WITH FRANCE; BEGINNING IN 1688, AND ENDING IN 1697.... One of two issues, apparently distinguished only by the name of the bookseller in the imprint. At the age of fourteen Burchett became clerk to Samuel Pepys, then Secretary of the Admiralty and served under him for seven years. Burchett himself later became Admiralty Secretary, serving from 1695 to 1742, and the position allowed him access to the materials from which he wrote this and a subsequent naval history, both of which are very highly regarded. Several expeditions of American interest are described herein, including voyages to Newfoundland and the West Indies, with most of the engagements being against the French. "Invaluable for the naval aspects of the War of the English Succession" - National Maritime Museum.
