LA VIE DU BIENHEUREUX GREGOIRE LOPEZ.... This is a new French translation by Arnauld D'Andilly from the Madrid 1658 edition. This work was first printed in Mexico in 1613, followed by editions in Madrid in 1642 and a French edition in 1644. Losa's work is the primary source of information on the life and works of the New World "hermit," Gregory Lopez, based on observations of some eight years. Lopez (1542-1596) lived a curious, largely solitary life in Mexico, among the Chichimecos Indians. He arrived in Veracruz in 1562, gave away all his money, and lived a simple, ascetic, pious life, mostly in pueblo Santa Fe. He did not practice absolute solitude, and was occasionally visited for advice on religious matters. Aside from telling the life of Lopez, this work also contains information on events in New Spain, and of the Spanish religious system in Mexico.
