Monk Lewis’s scarce final work, appearing the month after the death of his father. In 1815, “Lewis then departed on a continental tour which lasted for a year and a half, visiting Byron and the Shelley circle at the Villa Diodati in Geneva during August 1816. Here he made a translation for Byron (whom he had first met in 1813) of part 1 of Goethe’s Faust, which influenced the latter’s Manfred and other works.” (ODNB). A handsome, wide margined copy, joints only a little rubbed.
