[General Post Office, Sydney].

£65 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books · No longer available

Australia The GPO in Sydney was built in stages from 1866-1891 by architect James Johnstone Barnet (1827-1904) - here we see the first stage of the building. Intended to stand as a symbol of the city, the construction brought great conflict and controversy as Parliament raised objections to many of the carved panels, calling them 'tedious' and 'offensive.' The Post Master General disagreed, and the carvings remain today. Albumen print. Good tonal range and in fair condition, pasted on original card, photographer's number in negative, title in manuscript.
