Australia The Sydney General Post Office (GPO) was built in stages from 1866-1891 by architect James Johnstone Barnet (1827-1904) - here we see the second incarnation of the building. Intended to stand as a symbol of the city, the construction brought great conflict and controversy as Parliament raised objections to many of the carved panels, calling them 'tedious' and 'offensive.' The Post Master General disagreed, and the carvings remain today. Albumen print. Good tonal range and in fair condition, pasted on original card, title printed on card.
