This copy bears Thos Sopwith’s signature on the title, grandfather of Sir. T.O.M. Sopwith, a mining engineer and friend of Stephenson’s. Tipped in are two letters from Smiles requesting additional personal details off Sopwith for a second edition. Sopwith, an F.R.S.was an Engineer and geologist and had collaborated with Stephenson in developing both French and Belgian railways.
