[THREE MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENTS REGARDING THE ORDINATION OF GEORGE DUFFIELD TO THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN PHILADELPHIA]. Three documents concerning the controversy over the call of George Duffield to the pulpit in Philadelphia. The present complaint was lodged against the Second Presbytery of Philadelphia and read at the Synod in 1773, that church having obstructed the appointment of George Duffield to the Pine Street Church based on a disagreement with his doctrinal views. The present documents are printed in the records of the Presbyterian Church. Written in three different hands, they are signed by ten different witnesses.The first document, signed by John Roan, is the overture "that no Presbytery be permitted to receive any stranger under the character of minister or candidate, or to give him appointments in the Congregations under our care, until the Synod that shall meet next after their arrival" in order that the Synod might examine and approve the candidate. The second document gives the unanimous dissent of the Second Presbytery against the "injurious law recorded above," protesting that to give the Synod the power of appointment takes away the rights of the individual congregations. It is signed by six members of the congregation.
