DOCTOR WATTS'S IMITATION OF THE PSALMS OF DAVID, CORRECTED AND ENLARGED BY JOEL BARLOW. Fourth edition of Barlow's revision of Watts' Psalms, first published in 1785. "Barlow was invited by the General Association of Connecticut to revise Dr. Watts version of the Psalms in order to remove the allusions to Great Britain and the king and so make them more acceptable to singing in the United States." Barlow, notable poet, "Hartford Wit" and outspoken political savant of the early years of the United States republic, is described as one of the most liberal thinkers of his time (DAB). Several friends collaborated with him on the project, including the poet John Trumbull. A rare edition.
