A Crystal Age. First edition of this early work of science fiction, which anticipated modern ecological mysticism. Published anonymously, Hudson's early work is a "fine quasi-utopian novel of the far future" (Clute & Nicholls). The novel was written as a response to late-Victorian capitalism. Hudson was only listed as the author in 1906 with the publication of the second edition, to which he added a preface. In this he stated that his romance was born out of "a sense of dissatisfaction with the existing order of things combined with a vague faith or hope of a better one to come".
