The Memorial. First edition of Isherwood's second novel, the first composed in his signature semi-autobiographical style; "a remarkably acute and assured novel about the pre- and post-war generations, seen from both sides of the divide" (ODNB).The jacket design is by John Banting (1902-1971), an early Bloomsbury group artist who had established a studio in Fitzroy Street by 1925. He created designs for the Hogarth Press, the ballets Pomona (1929) and Prometheus (1936), and was a close friend of Nancy Cunard.The edition comprised 1,222 copies in three states; this copy is in the first state, bound in pink and white linen.
