Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) was a prominent English educator, noted chemist, and controversial dissenting theologian. In 1794, following several years of attacks for his views, Priestly emigrated and settled in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, where he remained for the final decade of his life. He remained a prolific author, and friend and correspondent of leading men of the day.
