A dramatic portrait of Dash, Colonel Thornton's prized pointer, after a painting by Sawrey Gilpin. Sawrey Gilpin studied art under Samuel Scott, the well-known landscape painter. He devoted himself to sporting art and developed a keen eye and hand for horse portraiture. In 1773 he was made a Director of the Society of Artists, and in the following year he was elected President. Gilpin caught the eye of Colonel Thornton who became his chief patron, commissioning such noted
