A pupil of Harrison Bird Brown, the American artist Nicholas Winfield Scott Leighton was initially trained as a landscape painter but is primarily known for his images of animals, particularly thoroughbred racing horses. He funded his artistic education in Portland, Maine by rearing and trading horses, a job which gave him an intimate knowledge of equine anatomy that later manifested itself in his paintings.
