A DEFENCE OF THE NEW ENGLAND CHARTERS. The third London edition of this work, first published in 1721. Howes describes it as a "notable contribution to political thought, voicing the theory that, by reason of their contractual nature, these charters could not now...be abrogated and government restored to the Crown." Other printings appeared in Boston (1721, 1745 and 1765) and no doubt provided fuel for the fire then well kindled.
