Winter Movement and other poems. First edition of the author's first book, "greeted as one of the most promising of its day, and compared to W. H. Auden's Poems (1930)" (ODNB).Julian Bell, son of Clive Bell and nephew of Virginia Woolf, published only three works in his lifetime, with a fourth released after he was killed in the Spanish Civil War in 1937. The present work "consists largely of poems about the English countryside. They are extremely finished and controlled performances, with a firmness of diction and an exactness of observation, although their inspiration was Georgian rather than modernist" (ODNB).
