A presentation copy, inscribed on the front pastedown: "Major Gen. Oliver O. Howard U.S.A. Commanding Division of the Pacific San Francisco California / with the compliments of Edwin A. Sherman Chairman of the Committee of Arrangements Oakland Cal. / would have been sent before but absence in Mexico prevented." Howard was one of the "vice presidents" of the celebration and was instrumental in its execution, and Edwin A. Sherman was the "orator of the day." Howard was an important Union General who played a key role at Gettysburg and later in the Indian wars.
