Rare separately-published chart of the Isle of Wight and the approaches to Portsmouth, from Christchurch in the west to Selsey Bill in the East. At this time, Portsmouth Naval Dockyard was the largest industrial installation on the world, head quarters of the British Channel Fleet, its importance solidified by its strategic position facing the coast of France. The chart was first published in 1797 at the time of the infamous naval mutinies at Spithead and The Nore and here reprinted in August 1814, shortly after the abdication of the Emperor Napoleon, by Heather’s successor.
