APPEALED CASES. A HISTORY OF CERTAIN COURT CORRUPTIONS, IN THE U.S. AND STATE COURTS OF DAKOTA, WITH RAMIFICATIONS AND CONNECTIONS, etc. A scarce work on South Dakota and an important call for reform of legal practices at all levels. The immediate provocation of this book was Houghton's loss of a case (involving a mining claim) in which he alleged that he was refused the right to reply to his adversaries in court and that evidence was ignored. He responded with this scathing attack upon judges, lawyers, and court officials in South Dakota, making accusations and naming names for misconduct stretching back some twenty years. Scarce on the market, and a valuable source for the understanding of legal practices in late 19th-century South Dakota.
