A hugely popular introductory textbook to the Classical Political Economy of Adam Smith, David Ricardo, and John Stuart Mill by the suffragist, political leader, and economist Millicent Fawcett (1847-1929). It was so well regarded that ten editions were published over a period of twenty five years - a record for an elementary textbook of that time. The second edition presented here is notable for its increased didactic tone, with Fawcett noting in her preface the addition of suggested questions at the end of each section, what she describes as “a few little puzzles, which the learner is expected to solve for himself or herself”. Provenance: contemporary ownership inscription of one ‘Edwin Slansfield, Westminster, Training College’ dated ‘Sep 12 1874’ in black ink to the front free endpaper. With some rather enthusiastic inked annotations throughout, as well as to the rear free endpaper.
