GREENE, Graham.

Stamboul Train. First edition, second issue, with the corrected text as usual. Greene's early novel is presented here in an attractive example of the dust jacket designed by Philip ("Pip") Youngman Carter (1904-1969). Although published as a novel, Greene later categorized the book as an "entertainment".The character of a pompous author appears in the central section of the novel. In the first issue he was named Q. C. Savory. Upon reading a review copy, J. B. Priestley became convinced that Savory was based unflatteringly upon him. Priestley threatened to leave Heinemann and, as recalled by Greene in A Sort of Life, "if Heinemann were going to lose an author, they would much prefer to lose me". References to "Q. C. Savory" were, accordingly, changed to "Quin Savory".
