BAGNOLD, Enid.
£75 · Offered by Peter Harrington · No longer available
Four Plays. First edition, first impression, inscribed by the playwright on front free endpaper: "Dear Billie, with deep gratitude & love from Enid (Have a look at "Call Me Jacky" - I might be badgering you again if you can't understand it)". The collection includes the plays The Chalk Garden, The Last Joke, The Chinese Prime Minister, and Call Me Jacky. Although Bagnold's other plays were not particularly successful, "she enjoyed one major triumph with The Chalk Garden (1955), which ran in London for two years and was described by Kenneth Tynan as possibly the finest English comedy since those of William Congreve" (ODNB). A film adaptation of The Chalk Garden was released in 1964, proving a box-office hit, and the play still enjoys popularity in the British theatre.
