Warden, David B.:
$375 · Offered by William Reese Company
A STATISTICAL, POLITICAL, AND HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA; FROM THE PERIOD OF THEIR FIRST COLONIZATION TO THE PRESENT ... Warden, then the American consul in Paris, was one of the first collectors of American books. He later sold his collection to Harvard and the New York State Library. The present work, based on his collections, is one of the most thorough gazetteers of the United States to that time. Each state or territory is described in detail, and there is a long section on American Indians. Tocqueville relied on Warden's book in marshalling statistics for DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA. The colophon at the rear of the first volume gives a date of 1818.
