REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE APPOINTED BY THE CITIZENS OF CINCINNATI, APRIL 26, 1838, TO ENQUIRE INTO THE CAUSES OF THE EXPLOSION OF THE MOSELLE, AND TO SUGGEST SUCH PREVENTIVE MEASURES AS MAY BE BEST ... The steamship Moselle exploded at Cincinnati, one of a number of such steamship disasters of the day. The circumstances of the event are recalled herein in great detail, including calculations regarding the projection and velocity of the thrown casualties. Means of preventing such tragedies in the future are discussed. Using the interstate commerce clause, the federal government investigated steamboat explosions and set national standards for boiler construction. From this laudable beginning stems all federal control over just about anything one can think of. Scarce in the trade. The frontispiece depicts the "New Spring Manometer Proposed by Dr. Locke."
