[GROUP OF TWELVE STEREOCARDS OF YOSEMITE AND THE CALIFORNIA BIG TREES]. A nice group of stereoscopic views of Yosemite and the Big Trees in California, published by John P. Soule of Boston. Soule published some 250 stereo cards of scenes on the West Coast, and the present collection contains several well-known views. Included are views of the Yosemite Valley, South Dome, Nevada Fall, Vernal Fall, and the Three Brothers. One of the views is of Mariposa County, showing the Grizzly Giant big tree. The images are not attributed on the mounts, but they were almost certainly taken by Martin Mason Hazeltine. Peter Palmquist calls Hazeltine a "first-class itinerant photographer" and says he was the major source for western stereographic negatives in the 1860s and 1870s. He likely made his first trip to Yosemite Valley in 1867, and was furnishing Soule with photographs by 1869. Hazeltine was one of the most prolific and accomplished photographers of Yosemite, spending several summers in the 1870s camped along the Merced River, taking photographs all over the valley. During a career that spanned a quarter of a century Hazeltine travelled throughout the west, taking and marketing his photographs. A full list of the views in the collection is available.
