The expedition’s success was partly due to the efficient organization of Chuma, one of David Livingstone’s compatriots, and equally “[u]nlike other white explorers, whose expeditions had been beset by desertions and mutinies, Thomson lost only one member of his original party - a testimony to his easy-going, laissez-faire style of leadership that appealed so much to his African companions” (Howgego).
