Simson, Robert:

$300 · Offered by William Reese Company

ELEMENTS OF THE CONIC SECTIONS...TRANSLATED FROM THE LATIN ORIGINAL, FOR THE USE OF STUDENTS OF MATHEMATICS. The first American edition of noted 18th-century British mathematician, Robert Simon's ELEMENTS... and, according to Karpinski, the first American work on conic sections. "In 1735 Simson published 'Sectonium Conicarum Libri V'...which he partly intended as an introduction to the treatise by Apollonius of Perga on the subject. Simson had an aversion to the algebraical treatment of 'conics' that was prevalent, and in his own work returned to the 'purer model of antiquity,' deducing the properties of the various curves without the aid of sumbols" - DNB. OCLC records a printing in Glasgow of 1775, translated by A. Marshall and notes two subsequent 1804 American editions.
