ESSAY ON MODERN MARTYRS: WITH A LETTER TO GENERAL BURGOYNE. One of the many assaults on Gen. Burgoyne's character and conduct offered up after the British defeat at Saratoga. The anonymous author begins with a brief essay on the history of martyrdom and all its forms, followed by a thirty-page open letter to Burgoyne critical of his conduct in the American war. He mockingly calls Burgoyne's case "the most extraordinary that ever has occurred in the history of modern martyrdom" and proclaims that "whatever misfortunes you may have suffered, whatever losses you may have endured, have been the consequence of your own acts, or the effects of your own solicitation." "Supposed to be by Mr. Dallas" - Sabin.
