The Spoilers. First edition, first printing. With the pencilled ownership signature of Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962), First Lady of the United States between 1933 and 1945. Published the year after her marriage to Franklin Roosevelt, it includes the bookseller's ticket of the Brentano's branch in Washington, DC, and may have been a gift from then-President Theodore Roosevelt, who was known to enjoy outdoor and Wild West literature, and who had given Eleanor away to Franklin at their wedding. The novel, based on Stout's own experiences during the Klondike gold rush, tells the story of corrupt government officials stealing gold mines from prospectors, and was a best-seller the year it was published.
