Œuvres Complètes. Presentation set, one of 60 sets reserved for the author and inscribed by him to his friend and English translator Dorothy Bussy on the half-title to vol. I: "à ma chère amie Dorothy Simon Bussy, André Gide", with one ink annotation (vol. III, p. xi) and a few orthographic corrections by Gide. There are also several other annotations in pencil, perhaps by Bussy.Dorothy Bussy (1865-1960), the sister of Lytton Strachey, remained lifelong friends with Gide after meeting him in 1918. She was his principle English translator, and her collected correspondence with him was published in the three-volume work Correspondance André Gide - Dorothy Bussy (1979-1982).Numbers 3,001-3,060 were reserved for the author, this set being number 3026. Loosely inserted are numerous reader's notes regarding this edition and Gide's corrections to this copy, cuttings from articles and auction catalogues, and the invoice of the bookbinders A. & M. Winstanley.Justin O'Brien's Index to this collection of Gide's works is the second edition, no. 143 of 1050 copies, and it was originally published in America in 1949. O'Brien was also the translator of the four-volume work The Journals of André Gide (1947-1951).
