Fanning, a native of Connecticut, set sail in 1792 for the South Seas in search of seal skins. During the following twenty-five years he made voyages around the world and to the Pacific, visiting Australia, south Georgia, Fiji, Tonga, and the Marquesas. He discovered a number of islands, one of which still bears his name. Included is a narrative of the first American naval exploring expedition to the southern hemisphere in 1829-30.
