Inscribed by Parry on the half-title: “Wm Sturges Bourne with Capt Parry’s best compliments.” Having sailed under John Ross in 1818, Parry was given command of the Hecla and instructed to continue the search for the north-west passage. Parry’s party made their way through Lancaster Sound, into Barrow Strait, and as far west as Cape Providence. They spent the winter to 1819-20 in a cove on Melville Island where “Parry did everything possible to keep his crew occupied. There was constant activity, plays were acted at the ‘Royal Arctic Theatre’ and Sabine edited a periodical journal, The North Georgia Gazette, and Winter Chronicle ” (Howgego).
