SOUTH SEA BUBBLES. By the Earl and the Doctor. Journal of a voyage including stops at Tahiti, Huahine, Bora-Bora, and Samoa, undertaken in the summer of 1870, with much description of the islands, natives, etc. In October they were shipwrecked in the Ringgold islands, in the author's estimation "the most cannibalistic part of the Pacific." After an uneventful stay on the island they headed for Goat Island, but found salvation in a large ship headed for Levulara. The final chapter deals with the author's opinion of missionaries in the South Seas (deemed controversial and partially omitted from later editions), followed by a note on an interesting encounter with Maori Indians. A scarce, colorful narrative, told with a good deal of humor.
