John Hamilton Moore (1738-1807) was a Scottish chart-maker and publisher active in London, in 1793 appointed Chartseller and Hydrographer to H.R.H. the Duke of Clarence, later William IV. Despite this royal patronage, Moore was generally over-shadowed by his rivals, notably the partnership of Robert Sayer and John Bennett and his charts are now rarely encountered. This is a highly detailed chart of the English Channel, on three separate sheets, with larger scale insets of ‘Spithead’ (the approaches to Portsmouth), ‘Falmouth’, ‘Dartmouth’, ‘The Downs’ and ‘Plymouth’, as well as a number of coastal profiles. This example was clearly used as a working chart and annotated as such by an owner, with the attendant soiling and damage from handling, but is a rare survival of the type.
