The New Atlas and Commercial Gazetteer of China.

£1,900 · Offered by Maggs Bros Ltd

“‘The New Atlas and Commercial Gazetteer of China’ seeks to give all information that is essential to a business-man in regard to a country that comprises nearly a sixth of the earth’s surface, a country that has the largest and most heterogeneous population in the world, a country about which less is known than in regard to any similar area in the world.” (Preface). Possibly the most detailed account of commercial activity - both native and foreign - for the whole of China ever published, with separate sections on each of the provinces giving a wealth of economic data from the early 20th century. Includes chapters on the commodities, manufactures and industries, the Chinese Maritime Customs, communications (roads, post, telephone, rail), the opium-trade etc. Together with its large bi-lingual colour lithograph maps and charts this should be considered an essential reference work.
