Wagner states that the work "contains more on Lower California than almost any other book that had been published in one hundred and fifty years." Cowan states, "This work is considered the foundation of a library of Californiana" and notes for the London edition: "four plates appear to have been issued with but a few copies of the work, as two is the number usually found." The folding map shows California, while the plates depict coyote, deer, Indians, and the martyrdom of several Jesuits.
