Engraved beneath the title: “From the original portrait placed in the Royal Hospital Greenwich by several Naval Officers Scientific men, in honour of his great discoveries, Achievements in the Arctic and Antarctic Regions. North magnetic Pole discovered 1st June 1831- Highest North Latitude (82% 44’) Attained 23rd July 1827 - Highest South Latitude (78% 11’) attained 23rd February 1842.” The artist pays visual tribute to Ross’s achievements by placing a map of the Antarctic entitled “South Polar Discovery 1841-2” on the wall behind the subject. While the globe is placed with the Northwest passage to the fore.
