GAZOPHILACIUM REGIUM PERUBICUM. OPUS SANE PULCRUM, A PLERISQUE PETITUM, & AB OMNIBUS, IN UNIVERSUM, DESIDERATUM NON SINE MAGNO LABORE, & EXPERIENTIA DIGESTUM, PROVIDÈQUE, & ACCURATÈ ILLUSTRATUM. IN ... The third edition of this classic work on administrative and financial matters in Peru, following the first and second editions printed in Madrid in 1647 and 1675. The first part is primarily in Latin, with portions of the text in Spanish; while the second part, the contents, and the index are entirely in Spanish. Both parts are thoroughly documented with printed footnotes throughout. Sabin describes the work as "a compendium of what was known to be necessary to the officers of the Crown, on going to South America." For example, brief chapters are devoted to qualities that an official of the exchequer must have, the finances of royal officials, and books that officials must have to perform their duties. While the book's focus is proper financial administration for the Spanish Crown, a vast range of subjects are discussed including mines, merchandise, encomiendas, haciendas, ordinances for a variety of institutions, and the expenses of religious missionaries for the teaching and conversion of the natives.A marvellous guide to economic matters in Peru in the late colonial Peru, from the library of the noted Andean anthropologist, John Rowe.
