First edition, number 701 of 1,000 copies printed on Annonay vellum, from a total edition of 1,260 there were also 20 printed on velin cuve for friends of the publishers, 60 on japon and 180 on van Gelder. An undisclosed number were also printed but reserved from commerce. Joseph Kessel was a French novelist and member of the Académie française from 1962 until his death in 1979. Nathalie Gontcharova was a Russian avant-garde artist and member of Moscow's first radical independent exhibiting group, the Jack of Diamonds. She toured France as a set designer for numerous ballets and became a French citizen in 1928.
